Our background

As siblings of people with mental illness, we often wear two hats: a sibling hat and a therapist hat. Studies show that siblings of people with mental illness are prone to high levels of mental distress, including depression, anxiety, and even post-traumatic stress disorder.

The association was founded by Yardena Zilberstein, a sister to a patient, in order to foster a community of brothers and sisters to patients with mental illness, to provide ongoing support in dealing with personal challenges, and to assist in establishing the "Human Tissue" association.

The association has a knowledge base for support, learning and research on the subject of siblings for people with mental illness. Today, every issue regarding the place, role and well-being of siblings for people with mental illness is not well-maintained and unclear. Brothers and sisters do not have any "embarrassed teacher" explaining how to be a brother or sister for people with mental illness, and from that we set out and founded the "Human Tissue" association.

A strong community of brothers –
Strengthen personal and family resilience

The uniqueness of the association

Human Tissue is a unique organization that operates from the heart – and for the heart – of a public that is often transparent in public discourse - the brothers and sisters of people struggling with mental illness. At the organization, we believe that the human connection, especially between people who share similar experiences, is the key to healing, strengthening, and development.

Sibling-focused support

In a world where most support focuses on the contestant himself or his parents, Human Tissue puts the spotlight squarely on the siblings. No longer a "transparent" audience, but at the center. We see siblings as full partners in the process – and not just satellites around the contestant.

Community at eye level

We do not “treat” – the organization is an egalitarian, living, breathing community of brothers and sisters who choose to meet, listen, share, and embrace themselves and others. It is a space where every emotion is accepted – even shame, anger, guilt, or frustration – without the need to apologize.

An ongoing process of connection

The process we create is not a one-time event, but a deep and ongoing journey. Through meetings, support groups, workshops, and diverse activities – we enable siblings to build a space of healing, belonging, and growth, while nurturing their personal identity.

An egalitarian supportive community

The association creates a collaborative community based on open and equal dialogue between brothers, which allows a place to talk at eye level, share experiences, and find a deep emotional connection with those who truly understand them - because they are there too.

Change of consciousness

The association works not only to support siblings, but also to change the social discourse around them – to expose their difficulties, promote public awareness, and bring about a change in the perception of the mental health, education, and welfare systems regarding the place of siblings in the family and in care.
